A scam would imply that they are trying to take something from you illicitly. Since there is absolutely no financial requirement for admission to the Church, there is no scam.
In anticipation of the response “But you must pay your tithing to get a Temple Recommend” I would remind you that there are no background checks or financial statements submitted. You/each individual is free to understand the doctrine of Tithing in his own way and your/each individual’s declaration that you are a full tithe payer is sufficient. No scam there either.
“But the Church is so rich! It has billions!”
it is a large and healthy organization. I see nothing wrong with that. I also see nobody within the Church heirarchy personally benefitting from that wealth. They live modestly and work extremely hard. No scam there, either.
