Anti-Mormon efforts at the
2004 Mesa Easter Pageant
Many people know that anti-Mormons show up and protest at the LDS General Conferences. You may not know that whenever the Saints meet, there is a good chance that anti-Mormons will be present, passing out literature and carrying signs that point out “problems” with Mormonism.
These pictures were taken at the 2004 Mesa Arizona Easter Pageant. The pageant has been produced annually by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1928, and routinely gathers 8,000 to 12,000 people per night for each showing. Those opposed to the Church position themselves chiefly along Main Street, so they could pass out materials to those attending the open-air pageant, and so they could yell into the crowds seated on the grass, trying to enjoy the Spring weather. These pictures were taken by Allen Wyatt.
Under each picture you will find some comments by the photographer, as well as some links that provide additional information that explain the sensationalistic claims of the protesters.
A common theme presented by anti-Mormons is that we are somehow not Christian.
Are Mormons Christian?
What do the LDS believe about God?
Some people believe that Mormons are consigned to hell.
What do Mormons believe about salvation?
This protester asks an interesting question. Ironically, his sign
is equally valid as commentary on the other protesters at the pageant.
The LDS consider Joseph Smith to be a true prophet of God. All true prophets lead
people to Christ, despite the claims on this sign.
What Do Mormons Think of Jesus Christ? What Do Mormons Think of Joseph Smith?
This protester believes that “LDS” means “Liars, Deceivers, and Seducers.” Notice the
megaphone he is using to yell into the crowds gathering on the lawn.
Why Do Anti-Mormons Attack the Church?
This sign refers to the recent controversy concerning DNA and
the Book of Mormon, a recently popular topic for critics.
Does DNA disprove the Book of Mormon?
Jesus taught wisely when He said we should beware of false teachers.
These protesters believe that LDS prophets are false teachers.
What do Mormons Believe About Prophets?
The LDS believe the Bible when it says that we can become “joint-heirs with
Christ” (Romans 8:17) and receive all that the Father has. This belief, consistent
with the beliefs of early Christians, apparently upsets some modern Christians.
What do the LDS believe about exaltation and deification?
It is shocking to some that the LDS might believe Satan and Jesus are brothers.
Is Jesus the Devil’s Brother?
The LDS believe that the message of the cross is the good news concerning the
Atonement and Jesus’ resurrection. This, to LDS, is far from foolishness.
What do the LDS believe concerning the Atonement?
