Book of Mormon/Authorship theories/View of the Hebrews/Analysis of non-Isaiah scripture use
< Book of Mormon | Authorship theories | View of the Hebrews
Revision as of 18:30, 5 October 2009 by RogerNicholson (talk | contribs) (moved Book of Mormon and View of the Hebrews/Analysis of non-Isaiah scripture use to Book of Mormon/Authorship theories/View of the Hebrews/Analysis of non-Isaiah scripture use)
Critics point to the fact that View of the Hebrews cites the biblical book of Isaiah, and claim that this represents an influence upon the Book of Mormon text.
They ignore, however, that View of the Hebrews also uses many other scriptural citations. None of these are referenced in the Book of Mormon. Some such citations come from biblical books written before the Lehites' departure (i.e., Jeremiah and earlier) which would have been available to the Nephites under the Book of Mormon's narrative.
For material which post-dates Lehi's departure, the Book of Mormon manages to introduce such material (e.g., {[b||Matthew|3-5|}} in 3 Nephi 12-14; Malachi 3-4 in 3 Nephi 24-25) by appealing to prophetic revelation of material. So, even with the Book of Mormon narrative as it presently stands, introducing any biblical material would not have required any new techniques for Joseph Smith's supposed forgery.
Despite these two options for including material which Ethan Smith found compelling, the Book of Mormon uses none of it. These lists are not exhaustive, but represent the vast amount of scripture and other reference material which View of the Hebrews uses that the Book of Mormon ignores.
View of the Hebrews also makes reference to Josephus' Wars of the Jews in describing the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans. Despite having eyewitnesses in vision (2 Nephi 1꞉4), and as refugees (Omni 1꞉14-15, Helaman 8꞉21) to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, the Book of Mormon does not mine this vivid imagery to describe the city's passing.
There is also an occasion reference to apocryphal books of the Bible (e.g., Esdras, 2 Ezekiel), which also appear no where in the Book of Mormon.
