Response

It is not required for salvation to know were the Book of Mormon took place. For Latter Day Saints, its up to the Lord if he will reveal were the Book of Mormon events took place. As for the Bible, their are no maps in biblical scritures, nor directions given for people to know were many Biblical lands and sites are. For most Christians this means the GOD did not revealed the location were many biblical lands and sites are.

Scholars have found powerful evidences, and are almost certain that the trail of Leih has been found, yet their is still no official position on the geography(Old or New world) of the Book of Mormon.

As for the maps on the official KJV Bible published by the Church, for example, one shows the Exodus route as "possible route of the Exodus" and shows Mt. Sinai with a question mark. Their is no official possition were many Biblical lands and sites are.

Most modern scholars agree were Book of Mormon lands might be located in the New World, which is MesoAmerica. The church can publish a map of highly possible Book of Mormon lands in a new edition of the Book of Mormon if its decided.
