The author appears to be using Quinn's quotes and attributing to his sources without checking the primary source in order to make sure that ''Quinn'' got it right. And, since Quinn's intent was to portray Moroni in the idiom of "magic," it suited his purpose to call him "some kind ''of'' messenger," which makes it sound as if Joseph didn't know quite what to expect, or even the nature of the forces he was dealing with.  In fact, Joseph was praying to God&mdash;a messenger from God to a sinful man would be kind, or merciful.
