MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Foundation for Apologetic Information & Research (FAIR) is pleased to announce the Fourteenth Annual Mormon Apologetics Conference, August 2-3, 2012 at the South Towne Plaza in Sandy Utah. With Mitt Romney as the presidential nominee for the Republican Party, we anticipate several social issues coming to the forefront of our discussions. With that in mind, we have invited several speakers to talk on issues that might be raised during the campaign such as women’s, gay, and African-American issues. In addition to the social issues, we have talks on The Book of Mormon, the Book of Abraham, Joseph Smith’s polyandry and more.
Speakers include Jack Welch, Royal Skousen, Hanna Smith, Hartt Wixam, John Gee, Darius Gray, Brian Hales, Neylan McBaine, Kathryn Soper, Ugo Perego, Dan Peterson and more.
For May only, we are having our Early Bird registration price of $69.95 which includes the conference and lunch for both days. On June1, the price goes up. For more information go to:
Register for the conference through a link at the bottom of the page. Or you can register directly at the bookstore here:

WE NEED YOUR HELP
With Mitt Romney running for president, we have had to expand our activities to respond to criticisms of the Church. This costs money. Additionally, the cost of sponsoring our conference continues to climb. We try to bring information to you at little or no cost, but we still have expenses to cover and desperately need your financial help.
Without your donations, there would be no FAIR. But, with your donations, we are able to reach more people, participate more in the public square, and get more involved in refuting the mischaracterizations of our faith.
We really need your help. If you like our articles and want us to continue to be involved, please make a donation now.
We have created a new Webpage to process your donations to FAIR. On this page you can choose any amount to donate, and you can choose if you want to make the donation a one-time donation, a monthly donation, or a yearly donation. You can even specify how many times you want a recurring donation to occur. Any amount at all, no matter how small, would be a help to us.
We are using PayPal to process your donations, but you do not need a PayPal account. If you don’t have one, after you enter your donation and click on donate, simply look to the bottom left side of the page where it will say, “Don’t have a PayPal account?” and process your credit card there.
Please go to Donate to FAIR to make your donation now. We really need your help.
FAIR is a 501c(3) corporation, so if in the United States your contributions are tax deductible.
MUSIC TO SHARE
We have never before shared a song on the FAIR Journal. But, after hearing Alex Boye’ and the Orem LDS Institute of Religion Choir on this uplifting song, I couldn’t help but share. I think you will really enjoy it and find it worth sharing with your friends. Even your non-LDS friends will like this one. It is outstanding. Who knew Mormons could sing this well? I hope you enjoy it. This is Alex Boye and the Orem LDS Institute of Religion Choir:

NEW WEBSITE REVIEW ON FAIR
We have a new multi-part review of the Web site MormonThink.com. We hope that you take some time and look at the questions our volunteers pose. We hope that these reviews will make you think.
Criticism of Mormonism/Websites/MormonThink
The website MormonThink.com claims to be operated by active members of the Church with an interest in objectively presenting the “truth” about Mormonism. In reality, only the webmaster retains his membership in order retain credibility in his efforts to subtly influence other members to investigate his claims. The remaining website contributors are ex-Mormons who frequently post on anti-Mormon message boards. The webmaster is, by his own admission, pretending to be semi-active in order to destroy members’ and missionaries’ testimonies from within the social structure of the Church. The site pretends to be “balanced” by presenting information and links to apologetic sites, however, the conclusions reached by the site consistently reflect negatively on the Church’s truth claims. The site also contains a large amount of Temple content.

Response to MormonThink’s list of 25 items that would allegedly “make the Church true”–According to MormonThink.com, if the Church actually contained God’s truth and authority, “we would expect the following things to have happened in this way.” The following is a list of issues presented by the website followed by FAIR’s response. Most items on the list are standard anti-Mormon fare, issues FAIR believes have been “asked and answered” many times. Nearly all points appeal to some type of intellectual or religious fundamentalism.

MORMON VOICES
Criticisms Omit Crucial Context
Claims of Mormon racism that rely on repudiated notions and out-of-context quotes are evidence of religious bigotry that seeks to deny Mormons an equal standing in society. Bigoted attempts to label The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as racist often stem from political or theological motives, not a commitment to truth or equality. The attacks rely on dishonest tactics that distort or ignore the complete story.

MormonVoices Decries Use of Proof-Texting in Attacks Against the Church
MormonVoices, a volunteer group dedicated to correcting misstatements and misinformation about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has published a statement decrying the opportunistic accusation that Mormon scripture condones racism. Some critics, knowingly or not, have recently popularized arguments that rely on proof texting, a logical error that takes a passage out of context and purports to prove a point that cannot be fairly supported.

MormonVoices Lauds Rev. Jeffress for his Support of Romney
Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, was a supporter of Governor Rick Perry’s bid for the presidency when Jeffress referred to Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s religion as “a cult.” Therefore, his more recent endorsement of Romney was hailed as an important step forward in Mormon-evangelical relations by MormonVoices. “It is important to recognize,” said Scott Gordon, a managing director of MormonVoices, “that Mormons and evangelicals often share many common interests, and despite some theological differences, they can cooperate as friends and neighbors when those interests align.”

Understanding the Book of Mormon’s teachings on race
Recently, individuals curious about Mormonism and eager to ensure that members of minority races are protected have tried to learn what the Book of Mormon has to say about race. They have found passages relating to a group that “was cursed” with a “skin of blackness” and are concerned that this means Mormons see non-whites as defective, lesser people. This is not true.

MormonVoices Corrects Misconceptions About Race in the Book of Mormon
MormonVoices, a volunteer group dedicated to providing accurate information about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has published an article responding to concerns that the Book of Mormon teaches racism. The article clarifies that the Book of Mormon is written from an ancient perspective, and its references to skin color do not equate to racial categories as they are understood today.

Doctrine in the Mormon Church
Many critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attempt to discredit the Church by pointing to past statements by prominent Church members and leaders on a variety of topics, and then claiming that these statements represent the Church’s definite doctrine on a particular subject. Some of those critics further allege that the Church is in denial or engaged in some sort of disingenuous “cover-up” by failing to acknowledge responsibility for controversial statements that purportedly reflect the Church’s actual beliefs. These charges are all false.
A Primer on Mormon Priesthood
Recently, news reports have identified individuals as holding priesthood offices in the Mormon (LDS) church. Titles mentioned have included “Bishop,” “Stake President,” and “Priest.” Many may have assumed that because some Mormon priesthood titles are the same as titles used by other faiths, the offices must be similar in terms of requirements, selection, and authority. This is usually not correct.

Sally Hemings and the Gods Themselves
by Greg Smith on April 7th, 2012
Mit der Dummheit kämpfen Götter selbst vergebens [Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain] — Friedrich Schiller, The Maid of Orléans
The vicarious temple ordinances performed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Mormons”) are back in the news. This time, it is because someone has reportedly sealed Sally Hemings to Thomas Jefferson. (Hemings was a slave owned by Jefferson. She bore children that have Jefferson DNA. [1])
As usually happens with such things, the media and the blogosphere are a bubble. Some are well-intentioned expressions of concern, others are ill-informed, and some seem to just want to pile on and make the Church look bad, or use this as an opportunity to push their own reforming agenda on the Church.

Okay, let’s go over this again…
by Mike Parker on May 1st, 2012
An inquiry came to FAIR’s “Ask the Apologist” service this morning, asking for help with the following claim on the Wikipedia article “Linguistics and the Book of Mormon”:
Richard Packham has pointed out that several Biblical Hebrew names, including Aaron, Ephraim, and Levi are listed as Jaredites in the Book of Ether. He argues that these are anachronisms, since the Jaredites are supposed to have originated from the time of the Tower of Babel, and did not speak Hebrew.
Perennial ex-Mormon gadfly Richard Packham apparently fails to understand that the Book of Mormon is a translation, and translations render ancient words — including names — into modern forms that didn’t exist at the time.

United By Faith: The Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith Family (Limited to stock on hand)
Kyle R. Walker (Editor). American Fork Utah, Covenant, 2005. Hardbound, 6.25×9.25″ 439 pgs.
Meet the people who knew the Prophet Joseph Smith best. This intimate history quilts together the work of nine historians to take us inside Mormonism’s first family. Blending meticulous research with compassionate insight, the authors present unforgettable portraits of each member of an outwardly ordinary family–the family that helped mold an extraordinary man of God.
This is a story not only of triumph against all odds, but also a tender and moving tale of a family that, despite its flaws, remained intensely true to one of its own. The Smith family was the one constant amidst the turbulence of opposition that occurred throughout Joseph’s life. They were with him from the beginning of his spiritual experiences to his martyrdom, with every living family member following him to Ohio, Missouri, and then to Illinois–a testament to their belief in his prophetic calling.
United by Faith: The Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith Family offers compelling insight into this most significant family and casts penetrating new light as to why they were uniquely qualified to raise the Prophet of the Restoration.

Rise and Fall of Nauvoo (Limited to stock on hand)
Brigham H. Roberts, Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1900. 5.25×8″ softbound reprint by Archive Publishers, Grantsville, Utah.
Elder B.H. Roberts combines the story of Nauvoo’s history with doctrinal development taking place within the Church during the turbulent 1840s into this single classic volume. Reviewing the Missouri agitation surrounding the relocation of the Saints into the swampy bogs of Commerce, Illinois, through its transformation into Nauvoo “the Beautiful,” the reader is led through petitions for redress to the federal government for previous losses in Missouri; the intrigue of John C. Bennett; the introduction of plural marriage; blame for the attempted assassination of Missouri’s governor; the several local and state events surrounding the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith; and the subsequent transition of Church leadership to the Twelve Apostles. This is one of the most complete historical accounts of the Nauvoo Period (1840-1846); a critical era in Church development.

The amazing story of how “Dr.” or “Prof.” Walter R. Martin, a professional anti-Mormon, works to obstruct and distort the truth. As you read this book ask yourself if the Lord would use Walter Martin as His mouthpiece. Is he the kind of man you want to place your trust in? If Walter Martin thinks he has such a good case against the Mormon church, then why doesn’t he present it truthfully? Why is deceit necessary? Why go beyond the facts if one’s case is solid.

Opening the Heavens, Accounts of Divine Manifestations 1820-1844
Edited by John W. Welch with Erick B. Carlson. Provo, Utah: BYU Press and Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Book, 2005, Paperback, 512 pages
Think what New Testament scholars would give to have access to a single letter that Mary wrote about the raising of Lazarus. We have many such documents that relate to the Restoration of the gospel in our dispensation. Opening the Heavens records hundreds of accounts of divine manifestations relating to the Restoration- events that strengthen our faith and expand our knowledge of Church History. Did you know for instance, that there are ten recorded accounts of the first vision from the lifetime of Joseph Smith? That there are seventy-one documents that deal directly with priesthood restoration? This volume brings together, for the first time, all of the known documents from Joseph Smith’s lifetime relating directly to key events of the Restoration that were accompanied by divine manifestations. These firsthand accounts uniquely convey the spirit of these important occasions and provide precious details that help modern readers construct a vivid image of what transpired.

One-Minute Answers to Anti-Mormon Questions
Stephen W. Gibson, Bountiful, Utah: Horizon Publishers, 1995, 2005, 6.25×9″ softbound, 180 pages.
This volume will be a valuable addition to the library of Latter-day Saints who have been recipients of anti-Mormon literature or whose friends and neighbors, while investigating the Church, have been given anti-LDS hate literature.
Criticisms of the LDS Church are frequently based on misrepresentations and intentional misinterpretations of Mormon doctrine. This book provides useful clarifications and rebuttals of many of those misrepresented doctrinal and historical areas. It gives simple but authoritative answers to more than sixty often-asked questions posed by anti-Mormon detractors. The answers are direct and non-confrontational, providing the reader with ways to respond to those who question them in a friendly, teaching way.
The author points out pertinent Biblical parallels to many situations. His answers are supported by appropriate scriptures, statements of modern prophets, the writings of ancient Christian leaders, and corroborating findings by modern non-LDS scholars.
Brother Gibson encountered his first anti-Mormon book while serving in the Scottish-Irish mission in the early 60s. Disturbed by what he read, he and a fellow missionary analyzed the inconsistencies in the book as they spent their diversion days together.
In 1983, while serving as the Denver LDS Bi-regional Associate Director of Public Communications, he attended an early showing of an anti-Mormon movie. The experience spurred him to transcribe the script and publish a list of more than 50 factual errors found in the film. During the period of the ground-breaking and construction of the Denver Temple, he appeared on numerous radio talk shows, countering the negative press and misleading statements of anti-Mormon faction leaders.
Following the Denver Temple dedication, he and several friends began writing responses to the anti-Mormon literature they had encountered–a project which has continued for over a decade. This book contains answers to most of the commonly asked challenges posed by detractors during the past 15 years. Every Latter-day Saint can benefit from the keen insights it contains.
