Schlussfolgerung

Unmittelbar nach ihrem Ausschluss aus der Kirche, wandte sich Thomas B. Marsh an Cowdery und Whitmer bezüglich ihres Zeugnisse. Wenn es je eine Zeit gegeben hätte, ihr Zeugnis zu verleugnene, dann war es damals:

Ich fragte David ernsthaft,ob es war war, dass er demäß dem Zeugnis als einer der Zeugen des Buches Mormon eine Engel gesehen hat. Er antwortete, so sicher wie es einen Gott im Himmel gibt, hat er einen Engel gesehen, gemäß seinem Zeugnis, wie es im Buch ist. Ich fragte ihm, warum er nicht zu Joseph halte, wenn das so sei. Er antwortete, in den Tagen, als Joseph das Buch Mormon erhielt, sei er ein guter Mann gewesen, erfüllt vom Heiligen Geist, aber nun betrahte er ihn als gefallen. Ich befragte Oliver Cowdery auf dieselbe Weise und er antwortete mir ähnlich.[1]

Die Zeugen hatten jeden Grund, ihr Erlebnis zu widerrufen, und keinen Grund zu lügen, um sich selbst oder Joseph Smith, auf den sie viele Jahre lang nicht gut zu sprechen waren, zu stützen. Der einzig überzeugende Grund dafür, das sie bei ihrer Geschichte blieben war ihre grudnsätzliche Ehrenhaftigkeit und ihre Überzeugung, dass sie wirklich den Engel und die Platten gesehen und die Stimme Gottes gehört hatten.
