Die Idee, dass Walter der Magier Joseph Smiths Mentor war und dass sein „Mantel” auf Joseph fiel, als Walters das Gebiet verließ, stammt von Abner Cole. Cole veröffentlichte eine Spottschrift über das Buch Mormon und nannte es „Book of Pukei" (Buch des Spuks).
Matthew Brown erörterte dieses Buch in seiner Rede anlässlich der FAIR Konferenz 2006:
Cole behauptete im „Book of Pukei”, dass das Buch Mormon in Wirklichkeit auf die folgende Weise hervorkam:
- Walters der Magier war in Hexerei und Geldgräberei verwickelt.
- Walters wurde nach Manchester New York beordert, und zwar von einer Gruppe schlechter, fauler und träger Gestalten — einer von ihnen war Joseph Smith.
- Walters nahm diese trägen Individuen aus Manchester in die Wälder zu zahlreichen nächtlichen Ausflügen zur Geldgräberei. Sie zeichneten magische Zirkel, opferten einen Hahn und gruben in der Erde, doch fanden sie nie etwas.
- Die träge Gruppe aus Manchester, kam dann zu dem Schluss, dass Walters ein Betrüger sei. Walters gab zu, ein Schwindler zu sein und beschloss aus der Stadt zu verschwinden, bevor der Arm des Gesetzes ihn einholt.
- An diesem Punkt fiel der Mantel von Walters auf Joseph Smith, und der Rest des Gesindels aus Manchester sammelte sich um ihn.
- Der „Geist der Geldgräber” (der hier im Text bedingungslos mit Satan identifiziert wird) erschien Joseph Smith und offenbarte ihm die Goldene Bibel. [1]
Die Vorstellung, dass Walters Mantel auf Joseph Smith fiel, ist darum eine Schöpfung eines Feindes von Joseph Smith.
