Dies ist nach dem HLT-Glauben durchaus möglich, zumal das Buch Mormon zwei Fälle beschreibt, wo das vorkam.(2. Nephi 9:9; Alma 30:53). Joseph Smith hat im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederherstellung ebenfalls einige derartigen Fälle geschildert. (LuB 128:20; Lehren des Propheten Joseph Smith S. 214) Nichtsdestoweniger ist Joseph anscheinend dieser Taktik früh gewahr geworden und lehrte seine Mitglieder, wie man diese List erkennen kann. Die Bibel enthält auch einen Test, der uns befähigt zu urteilen oder, wie Johannes sagt: „prüft die Geister, ob sie aus Gott sind”. (1. Joseph Smith lehrte gleichfalls, „...Wenn ich behaupte, ein Zeuge oder Lehrer zu sein und habe nicht den Geist der Prophezeiung, nämlich das Zeugnis Jesu, dann bin ich ein falscher Zeuge ... Ein Mann, der sagt, er wäre ein Lehrer und Prediger der Rechtschaffenheit und leugnet den Geist der Prophezeiung, ist ein Lügner und die Wahrheit ist nicht in ihm und durch diesen Schlüssel können falsche Lehrer und Betrüger entdeckt werden.”
Bei der Ersten Vision wurde Jesus Christus von Gott dem Vater vorgestellt als der geliebte Sohn (Joseph Smith—Lebensgeschichte 1:17). Gott der Vater bezeugte im wesentlichen, dass Jesus Christus sein einzig gezeugter Sohn war, genau wie er es getan hatte, als Jesus im Fleisch kam und getauft wurde. (Matthäus 3:17; (Markus 1:11). In einer darauf folgenden Erscheinung bezeichnete Jesus sich selbst als „der erste und der letzte... der lebe... und der erschlagen wurde” (LuB 110:4). Jesus bezeugte, dass er der gleiche war, der im Heiligen Land lebte und für unsere Sünden gekreuzigt wurde. Er bestätigte, dass er tatsächlich im Fleische kam, um das Sühnopfer zu vollbringen.
Der Engel Moroni, der Joseph Smith erschien, bestätigte auch, dass „Jesus Christus im Fleisch kommen sollte”, indem er Schriftstellen aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament zitierte, die bei seinem Kommen erfüllt wurden.(Joseph Smith-Lebensgeschichte 1:40). Er erklärte außerdem, dass es seine (Moronis) Bestimmung sei, ein Buch zu offenbaren,„welches einen Bericht der früheren Einwohner Amerikas gibt und das ewige Evangelium enthält, wie es vom Erretter überbracht wurde” nach seinem Wirken in der Sterblichkeit. Der erklärte Zweck des Buches Mormon ist es in der Tat, sowohl die Juden als auch die Nichtjuden zu überzeugen, dass Jesus der Christus ist; als solches trägt es den Untertitel „Ein weiterer Zeuge für Jesus Christus”. Heilige der Letzten Tage glauben, dass es nach der Bibel ein zweiter Zeuge der göttlichen Mission Christi ist. Wäre Moroni Satan oder einer seiner Gefolgsleute, die als Werkzeug des Bösen handeln, hätte er bestimmt nicht so viele Menschen überzeugt, an Christus zu glauben. Das läuft Satans Absichten zuwider.(Matthäus 12:25)
Keiner der Boten, die Joseph Smith erschienen sind, leugnete, dass Jesus Christus der im Fleisch gekommene Messias sei. (LuB 13:1; 18:11–12; 19:16–19; 20:1; 110:4) und alle hatten ein Zeugnis von Jesus. Paulus gab uns einen endgültigen Schlüssel, um einen falschen Boten zu entlarven; er sagte, dass ihr Ende gemäß ihren Werken sein wird (2. Korinther 11:15). Wenn ihre Werke schlecht oder unredlich sein würden, werden wir wissen, dass sie nicht von Gott sind. „An ihren Früchten sollt ihr sie erkennen (Matthäus 7:20).”
Manche haben behauptet, Joseph Smith wäre von Satan verblendet oder durch seine Phantasie irregeführt worden. Aber diese Einwände scheitern an einer objektiven Analyse, wenn man die Heiligen Schriften als unseren Maßstab der Wahrheit benutzt. Die Lehren Joseph Smiths, das Buch Mormon und die HLT-Kirche bekräftigen, dass Jesus der Christus ist und dass er im Fleisch kam, wie in den Schriften prophezeit und versichert. Dass Satan zu diesen HLT-Wahrheiten inspiert, widerspricht Christi eigenen Lehren. (Matthäus 12:25–26; auch Matthäus 9:33–34; Markus 3:22–30; Lukas 11:14–26; Jesus der Christus, S. 218).
Zu glauben, ein ungebildeter Bauernjunge könnte sich diese Dinge eingebildet und so viele von ihrer Wahrheit überzeugt haben, ist schwer zu rechtfertigen. Besonders dann, wen man die Zeugnisse all jener betrachtet, die als Augenzeugen vieler dieser Ereignisse nahe daran beteiligt waren. In der Tat, zu bezweifeln dass diese Ereignisse, die von so vielen bezeugt wurden, stattfanden, braucht mehr Glauben als ihre Berichte als Tatsachen zu akzeptieren.
